Hi, I do not own a compaq, but i do have an elder model laptop. Try Fn+F2 to increase the display brightness and Fn+F1 to decrease the display brightness. This might be international.
Generally if your screen is overcast, the backlight is failing and there's little you can do about. You could ask your businessman to replace it, if still under warranty or you settle up extra cost.
