MB bump. I thought I would have 512MB - Whats going on??
Answer:
You have need of to tell us the system specs. To me it seem some of the ram might be used up by the video memory. Or your system can't certificate it.
Probably 384MB is the limit on yours.
What trademark and model is your laptop? There could be reasons for this up.
Check the detailed specs of your system at the manufactures website. If it is an elder system the chances are that it can single recognize up to 384.
Some laptop memory is shared beside your video memory. 384mb+128mb = 512mb. So im guessing that its shared with your video card
Possible scenario:
1) You may have a video subsystem that uses part of the pack of your main RAM. (Shared Video Memory)
2) Part of the RAM chip is doomed to failure.
3) You were sold a 128MB RAM chip and not a 256MB. Some chips you can't identify their size without digging up the sector number on the manufacturer website.
Next time you post you should record the operating system (Windows, Linux, OS X, whatever) and model of the computer. That makes it easier to find out if you own the shared memory or there is an issue beside your operating system.
check your user manual sometimes even though you supply more ram your system will with the sole purpose allow it to run a certin amount on you system it could be the 384
